The registration process… lol
-
After several people informed me that the registration process on here made their spidey senses tingle I went through it for myself, for the first time. Man, oh, man. I would never use your data for anything of course, but the whole “you must consent” business is brutal. I am going to look into disabiling both of those things. I will see what can already be disabled in configuration, and then probably talk to the nodebb developers and possibly roll my sleeves up and hack around in the code if I have to. More to come on this.
Long story short, it makes a whole lot of sense to get this right. This should not be enshittified! I will be 100% transparent in this process, because the details DO matter.

Ok but yeah the registration process is a bit of a dumpster fire. I believe the nodebb guys did this to be transparent but it comes off as alarmist. I dont know if they have legal reasons to post this messaging.
However, the fact that they write that the email field is optional but then later tell you that you must consent to giving your email, which is not in fact true (you can leave the email field blank and proceed) feels like a bug. I will report that to the nodebb guys.
Also, i noticed that my password recovery process isnt working, but whats new, right? (To the guys who know me). Seriously, i’ll try to get that working as well.

Alright, I figured this one out. It looks like by default the board was showing GDPR registration process. That's the higher level of explicity that Europe require regarding authentication process. Most of us never see this kind of thing in the US, unless we use a VPN. Anyway, the registration process shouldn't be so scary any more.
No, we will not do anything with your data and I guarantee that all we're really recording is IP address to ban bad actors like Chinese spambots.
