Getting away from Google:
- switched browser to kagi.com
- note that in Enshittification Cory mentions this browser as a paid site that uses googles data but without their rank ordering. Apparently i get 100 searches for free before they will attempt to charge me. I havent hit that yet. I do want to explore all of the features on kagi and see if anyone has done a solid review.
- Downloaded browser app to Orion, which is produced by the kagi guys
- note that reddit links dont try to open reddit app inside Orion which is nice.
- Switched safari app to use ecosia.org by default for search instead of chrome
- note that kagi.com is not an option for safaris browser. Duckduckgo, and ecosia seem to be the least harmful options.
- Switched my default browser to Orion.
Thoughts: Kagi doesnt feel like a sustainable thing. Seems likely to get shut down or enshittified so I dont see this as a permanent solution. I do need to compare this to ecosia and duckduckgo and would be grateful for any input people have.
Also, when authenticating to kogi i am using my gmail account so… thats next. I need a new email provider.

Options for federated auth in kagi are apple, google, microsoft and github (microsoft) but they also allow for creating your own name and password. Inside a link under this email field, entitled “Why do we need an email address?” Kagi suggests possibly using : https://simplelogin.io/ to alias your email. We should look further into that as well.
